In this lecture, illustrated with numerous stills and film fragments, the representation or evocation of corners in the medium film will be discussed. By means of some concrete examples picked out of a hundred years of film history, attention is paid to themes such as the visualization and optic dissolution of architectural corners in the medium film; the use of corners in set-constructions to give depth to cinematographic space; the compositional role of corners of the filmic image frame; the corner as narrative element; the creation of the filmic space with the help of diagonal camera positions; etc.

Steven Jacobs is art historian and specialized in the relation between film and visual arts. He published among others ‘The Wrong House: The Architecture of Alfred Hitchcock’ (2007), ‘Framing Pictures: Film and the Visual Arts’ (2011) and ‘The Dark Galleries: A Museum Guide to Painted Portraits in Film Noir’ (with Lisa Colpaert, 2013). He lectures at the Ghent University.
