Nicoline van Harskamp is an artist from Amsterdam who makes live performances and video works. In her latest project, she is attempting to predict the future of the English language.

Today, there are 3 times more people that speak English as a non-native language, than people who speak it as a native language. Because so many people speak their own kind of English, it will eventually become a language of non-standards. Nicoline can’t wait to find out what that will sound like, so she is trying to make it up already. And she needs the help of very young people to do so!

More and more children learn English at home from their parents, even if those are not native English speakers. In a way, those children are a little bit ahead of the future because there tend to be very creative with their English and make their own varieties. Nicoline would like work together with them on a short fiction film. Set in the not too far future, everybody will speak a ‘new’ kind of English, created collaboratively in a series of afternoon workshops and rehearsals. All children will feature in the final film which will be shown at Extra City.
