Extra City Vitrine #01 / The Translator's Note

10.11.2015 — 06.01.2016 Opening

Detached from the exhibition programme, on the border between Extra City and the street, the Vitrine thrives on its own rhythm with unexpected interpretations and site-specific projects.

The Translator’s Note

For the first exhibition in the Extra City Vitrine Pieter Jennes, Wouter Straetmans and Tom Volkaert invited ten artists to present work in which the choices of the (artistic) translator are not a presentation, but a reinterpretation of the original.

‘It is perhaps of our desire to think of the translation as a transparency, a clear window through which we see the meaning of the original, that we lose sight of the obvious impossibility of a one-to-one correspondence and take for granted the presence of the translator and the choices and praxis involved in the task.’
