Extra Academy #18: Tine Melzer

"Word Games"

05.12.2013, 19:00 — 23:00 Lecture

Extra Academy is a spontaneous alliance of Extra City, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Sint-Lucas Antwerpen.

The guest speaker of 5 December is Tine Melzer.

The presentation Word Games introduces strategies of making visual multi-media work between disciplines, using the codes and habits we share in language. The language we share hosts the language games we play. Common, yet often unnoticed mechanisms in language function like games we know how to play, because we see how others play it. Language may be considered mainly metaphorical, meaning relies on naming, ambiguity and context. A joke, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Gertrude Stein might drop by for a visit.

Tine Melzer works as artist, designer, researcher and teacher. Tine Melzer connects philosophy of language with her practice as language-based visual artist. Born in Germany (1978) she moved to Amsterdam in 1999 where she studied Arts and Philosophy and started teaching in academies and universities. She is based in Zürich since 2009. Her work is internationally shown and published since 2003. In 2013 she finished her PhD research at the University of Plymouth, UK.

Tine Melzer uses language as material. The amazement and enchantment of language and its mechanisms between humans is the nucleus of her art work; it is situated on the edge of theory and practice, knowing and seeing, saying and showing, text and image. The language-games (Wittgenstein) we play are the material for the work, the work succeeds if we can recognize our own behavior or experiences in the structure called ‘language’. The work is genuinely based on collaboration with experts from other fields and inspired by truly interdisciplinary exchange.
