On female representation in the city of today
Curated by Kunsthal Extra City and Middelheim Museum
Through a series of public discussions and artistic suggestions, we will – as city residents, activists, academics, opinion-makers and artists – put our heads together to think about how we approach the various aspects of female representation in monuments in the public space.
During this closing event, on the eve of International Women’s Day, moderators Ciska Hoet and Bieke Purnelle (RoSa vzw), artists ooooo and Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, poet Maud Vanhauwaert, and director of the Middelheim Museum Sara Weyns will come and offer their closing remarks and personal interpretations of the past discussions.
ooooo is a trans-universal constellation, hosted by Marthe Van Dessel, a performer, hacker, and cyberfeminist who creates devices, protocols and interfaces which connect personal and collective identities with the commons, co-authorship and the public domain.
Maud Vanhauwaert is a writer, theatremaker and Antwerp’s city poet. Her poem (and installation) for the city ‘You’ll Never GUESS WHO’ is based on the stereotypical images from the board game ‘Guess Who?’, but transcends the caricature of the male-female binary.
Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven is a visual artist. The representation of women plays a central role in her critical and socially-engaged oeuvre; not as an innocent, iconographic motif, but as a platform for projecting many unresolved societal, political and ideological issues.
Sara Weyns is the director of the Middelheim Museum and, with that, also responsible for art in Antwerp’s public spaces. From this position she explores the relevance of the monument today.
