Imagining Monuments with Henk De Smaele, Marcia Poelman, RoSa vzw (moderator), Milan Rutten and Stef Van Looveren

On female representation in the city of today

07.02.2019, 19:30 — 21:00 Discussion

Curated by Kunsthal Extra City and the Middelheim Museum

Through a series of public discussions and artistic suggestions, we will – as city residents, activists, academics, opinion-makers and artists – put our heads together to think about how we approach the various aspects of female representation in monuments in the public space.

During this second evening we aim to further broaden our understanding of gender – beyond the traditional male-female dichotomy – towards achieving equal representation in the city of today. With Henk De Smaele, Marcia Poelman, Milan Rutten and Stef Van Looveren, moderated by RoSa vzw.

Henk de Smaele teaches at the University of Antwerp and carries out research into the history of gender and sexuality in the 19th and 20th centuries. He’s the chairperson of the Archive and Research Centre for Women’s History in Brussels.

Marcia Poelman is the chairperson of Het Roze Huis, an HQ for LGBTQI+ people in Antwerp, and the organiser of the Antwerp Queer Arts Festival. She’s a diversity consultant for AP University College Antwerp.

Milan Rutten is Director of Marketing Strategy for the City of Antwerp and was responsible for the city’s diversity campaign with the rainbow letter-A, among other campaigns. As of March 2019 he will be the new director of the Arenberg cultural centre in Antwerp.

Stef Van Looveren is a visual artist. His installations, video, photography and collages are an attempt to pick apart and reflect on the performativity of our human behaviours, especially in the context of gender issues.
